Chances are you’ve never had it.
Real wasabi tastes more floral than what you’re eating with your sushi. It does not have a lingering and burning aftertaste.
So what are you eating exactly? Horseradish. More accurately, horseradish mixed with mustard extract, citric acid, yellow dye no. 5, and blue dye no. 1. It actually comes as a powder that restaurants mix together to create it.
Real horseradish comes from grating the Wasabi Japonica root from Japan. Real wasabi loses it’s flavor after about 15 minutes, so even if it was real wasabi, it wouldn’t be very good.
