When your grandma rants that bananas tasted better back in the day…she’s right.
The banana you are eating now is not the same banana that your grandparents ( and great grandparents ) enjoyed. Until the 1950s the king of bananas was the Gros Michel or “Big Mike”, originally, from Southeast Asia and then transplanted to Jamaica, Martinique and later Latin America.
In the 1950s, an outbreak of Panama disease effective killed off Big Mike and producers had to switch to the more hardy, less tasty variety you are eating now: the Cavendish.
Who knows how long that will last? Panama disease has mutated and many experts think our current banana choice is dying….again.
